What does it say about San Antonio that it voted for a 200-plusmillion-dollar performing arts center? And what does it say about its citizens when private contributions accounted for over $50 million of those funds? Quite a lot, actually, and all of it good.
With the Performance Hall, the 250-seat Studio Theatre and a 600-seat outdoor venue, the “state of the arts” Tobin Center is the new home for the San Antonio Symphony, Ballet San Antonio and the AtticRep theatre company, not to mention major touring artists and shows. But the Tobin Center is more than impressive numbers.
The H-E-B Performance Hall acoustics can be “tuned” to create optimal conditions for each performance. The floor can be lowered to accommodate a larger audience or banquet-style seating for events. The intimate and ultra-flexible Carlos Alvarez Studio Theatre can be configured for traditional theatre seating, for performances in the round or dinner theater. It’s more than world-class technology.
The Tobin Center is home to something quite magical. It inspires dreams. Here, your children and their children will hear their first symphony, see their first ballet, experience their first play—and perhaps wonder if they could do that too. Composers, choreographers, designers and playwrights will see their first premiere. Performers will feel the first rush of a standing ovation.
And you? You get to experience all the best the arts can be, any day of the year.
